After several years of planning and preliminary fundraising, Oakdale is ready to take its first steps toward the construction of the new girls’ dormitory. Reaching this point in our Breaking New Ground Comprehensive Campaign represents great progress, and we are excited to begin the early phases of construction.
On Friday, October 5, 2012, at 4:00 PM, we are holding a groundbreaking ceremony for the new girls’ dormitory. Our groundbreaking takes place concurrent to two other events on campus: our October 5 board of trustees meeting and our Homecoming on October 5-6.
We have raised over $1 million toward the funding goal, and we need to raise an additional $400,000 to complete the fundraising goal of this building. We are beginning in faith, trusting that God will send friends to complete the funding of this building, just as He did with the Beacon Center.
One year ago we redirected an underground culvert to accommodate the location of the dorm, and two weeks ago we removed the three mobile homes from the site of the new building. We are now completing work on tree removal so that this week the site grading begin. This fall, our plan is to have the foundation system (which will require caissons, as was necessary with the Beacon Center) complete so that in the spring, steel erection can begin.
Several reasons compel us to begin now, including a desire to avoid further rising in material and labor costs. Also, we want to create the conditions in which volunteer work teams can come and do interior work. Past projects have proven our ability to bring such volunteers to campus, and we look forward to the great work, given with love for the Lord and His purposes, that will be done by work teams.
The most compelling reason of all to begin now is that we want to serve more students. I am pleased to report that despite a relatively large graduating class, we were able to begin this year with a more than 10 percent enrollment increase. This has required that we open overflow housing for girls once again, as well as opening our second dormitory for boys.
